Four Workington Academy whiz-kids achieved third place in the Cumbrian heat of the UK Mathematics Trust’s Maths Team Challenge. The quartet was made up of Alicia Graham and Lucy Wilson from Year 7 and Daniel Bell and Matthew Glover from Year 9. The team was one of 17 schools who competed at Caldew School in Dalston, near Carlisle.
The competition aims to stretch and challenge able mathematicians and broaden their mathematical horizons, tackling the sort of problems that they may not necessarily meet in their normal lessons. The students must work as a team to solve problems including a cross number puzzle and a mathematical relay.
The team had been trained by sixth former Lewis Maxwell, who is predicted top grades in both Maths and Further Maths at A-Level. He said “I’m very pleased for the team, they prepared well. I have enjoyed the UKMT activities throughout my school career so it was nice to give a little bit back.”
Year 7 team member Lucy Wilson was very pleased with her team’s showing. She said “This has been a good experience for me and I was pleased with third place. We are aiming to do even better next year and hopefully secure a place at the National Finals in London.”
