At Workington Academy we endeavour to ensure all students are studying a suitable course; matched to both their abilities and skills and their future plans.
We ask that students complete the application form which can be found below in detail and submit to firstname.lastname@example.org. Deadline for applications is 3pm Friday 9 February.
In order to ensure all students can achieve we have clear entry criteria requiring grades 4 in both English Language and Mathematics plus 3 additional grade 4’s in any other GCSE subjects. Individual subjects have additional entry criteria as shown below.
Art – Grade 5 in GCSE Art alternatively a portfolio of work can be submitted.
Applied Science – A grade 4 in both Science and Additional Science
Biology – A grade 6 in GCSE Biology required or Grade 6-6 in Combined Science and Grade 6 in Mathematics
Business – A grade 5 in English and Mathematics and GCSE Business grade 5 recommended
Chemistry – A grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry required or Grade 6-6 in Combined Science and Grade 6 in Mathematics
Core Maths – A grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics is required
Design Technology – GCSE Grade 5 in Design Technology required
Economics – A grade 6 in Mathematics and English Language required
English Language – A grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language required
English Literature – A grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language/Literature required
French – A grade 7 in GCSE French required
Further Mathematics – Grade 8 in Mathematics required. (This course can only be studied alongside A Level Mathematics)
Geography – A grade 5 in English Language, Mathematics, Combined Science and Geography required
German – A grade 7 in GCSE German required
Health and Social Care – A grade 5 in English Language and either GCSE Biology at grade 5 or 5-5 in Combined Science required.
History – A grade 5 in English Language and GCSE Grade 5 in History required
ICT – A grade 5 GCSE ICT related qualification or alternative Level 2 ICT Qualification required
Maths – A grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics required
Media – A grade 5 GCSE ICT related qualification or alternative Level 2 ICT Qualification recommended
Performing Arts – GCSE Drama or music at Grade 5 or evidence of prior involvement in performance related activities, alternatively, an audition may be offered; as well as Grade 5 in GCSE English Language
Physics – Grade 6 in GCSE Physics required or Grade 6-6 in Combined Science and Grade 6 in Mathematics
Politics – Grade 5 in English Language required. Grade 5 in either History or Geography recommended.
Religious Studies – A grade 5 in English Language required. GCSE Grade 5 in Religious Studies recommended.
Sport – A level 2 pass or above in BTEC Sports Science or a grade 4 in GCSE P.E. If no previous experience, a grade 5-5 in Combined Science, 5 in English Language and 5 in Mathematics are required and evidence of contribution to a sport team.
Students will be required to choose 3 subjects from three different blocks, A-D plus one reserve subject.
Students who satisfy the entry criteria will be invited for interview to further discuss their courses and receive individualised careers information, advice and guidance. We recommend that parents also attend these interviews.
In July students will begin their courses, so it is vital that students attend these introductory sessions. Both students and teaching staff will be able to discuss any concerns arising following these two days of lessons. During this time, students will also be given work to be completed over the Summer break which is a requirement to continue their course.
