The Year 7 students at Workington Academy embarked on their first outdoor adventure on Tuesday 17 October as they descended upon the shores of Derwentwater, Keswick. The students participated in an action-packed day of fun problem solving and team building activities in their new form groups. Each activity was designed to develop the students’ team work, leadership and communication skills. All Year 7 students participated in five different activities including:
- Shelter building
- Treasure – orienteering
- ‘Saving the Water’
- Spiders Web
- ‘Ping Pong’
- ‘A-Z Nature Trail’
All activities involved students taking on different roles within a group and team. All students set individual targets and goals for the day and reflected afterwards on skills that they had developed throughout each activity. Nicola Tweddle, Director of Learning – Year 7 said, “The students were fantastic ambassadors for Workington Academy throughout the day. All 160 students that participated in the event worked collaboratively during the completion of each activity, embracing the academy’s core values of respect, responsibility and resilience. All students were very inclusive of one another and strived throughout each challenge to be the best that they could be as an individual and as a team.” A fantastic day in the autumn sunshine was had by all students and staff from the academy.
