Westfield Housing Association have been supporting education in Workington for many years and their generous donations have been used to reward students at Workington Academy, not just for academic excellence but for fulfilling the core values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. Progress, effort, attendance, contribution to academy life and community service have all been recognised along with attainment and achievement.
Central to the work of Westfield Housing Association is Joan Minto, wife of the late Billy Minto. Billy was a geographer and as a tribute to him and the work of his family and associates a geography classroom has been named as The Minto Room.
Following a drinks reception Joan (accompanied by Neil Venables, CEO, Peter Bales, Chairman, Lynda Coid, Operations Manager, and Board Members Susan Carmichael and Carol French) officially opened the room. Headteacher Des Bird gave a warm speech to thank Westfield Housing Association for their support and Joan replied on behalf of Westfield Housing Association. The group then enjoyed a tour of the school conducted by Head Boy Nathan Poland and Head Girl Kiera Benzie.
Over coffee the group commented on the excellent behaviour, appearance and attitude of students and were thoroughly impressed by the quality of the building.
