On Friday 12 October, we welcomed 340 Year 6 students to Workington Academy for our spectacular Under the Sea Day. Children from seven of our feeder schools joined together to enjoy a day of English and Drama activities.
Our transition days give all children the chance to experience life beyond Primary School, and to meet peers whom they may be in school with in Year 7.
Children enjoyed a myriad of maritime themed sessions, from poetry to drama, descriptive writing to being detectives in our escape rooms, and sea shanty writers to performers. All activities were engaging and enjoyable, as well as being a taste of what is to come on the Key Stage 3 curriculum.
Impressively, it was our KS5 students who lead the way with many activities; student leadership is heavily promoted across the academy and the day gave those involved a valued experience. It is excellent for UCAS and confidence building. We also had Year 7 and Year 10 students as Academy Ambassadors, helping the Year 6 pupils and staff throughout the day. We couldn’t be prouder of our students and their approach to such a big event.
Miss Skivington, Victoria Junior School, said “Our kids are always excited to come to these days. They love it and it’s a good opportunity for them to engage with Year 7s.” Colleagues from local schools enjoy coming to the days to see how their pupils will react to the move to Secondary School.
Chloe Habicher, Westfield Primary School, highly recommended the day to future Year 5 and 6 pupils. She said that she was “enjoying all of the creative things. I’m looking forward to the escape room, as I’m good at puzzles”.
The English department would like to thank all of the staff and pupils from the attending schools for being extremely enthusiastic, focused and diligent. The support for our transition days is always outstanding, and it’s vastly appreciated.
Year 5 students will be invited to join us for a day at Workington Academy during the Summer Term. We would love to hear your ideas about themes. These can be e-mailed to Mrs Williamson at alwilliamson@workingtonacademy.org.
Schools involved in the Under the Sea Day were: Victoria Junior School; Beckstone Primary School; Seaton Junior School; Ashfield Junior School; Distington Community School; Westfield Nursery and Primary School and St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School.
