Καλώς ήρθες, Έτος 5!

That means “Welcome, Year 5” in Greek. If you’ve arrived at this page, it’s to find out more about our exciting Year 5 events taking place in July. We’re overjoyed to have you join us at Workington Academy for the first of many Transition Days.

We know that coming to Secondary School can be quite daunting- so this page is here to ease your mind and make the day nothing but a fun and incredible learning experience.

Why the theme, Ancient Greeks?

The Ancient Greeks were fascinating people, who made significant contributions to Literature, Sport, Theatre, Science, Maths, Medicine, Art and Architecture (to name but a few). Staff at Workington Academy feel that we can give you a truly special Secondary experience by using the theme of Ancient Greeks as a golden thread for your day. Whether you’re getting your heartrate pumped in our Olympic Games in PE, or making your own sophisticated sculptures in Art, you will have an exceptional time learning all about this delightful and influential culture.

What to expect on the day?

Whether you’re joining us on July 10 or July 14, it doesn’t matter, as each day will follow a similar schedule and will allow you to join in a wide range of KS3-style lessons, just like those you’ll do when you join us here as a Year 7 (September 2024 will be here in no time).

You’ll arrive at 9.30am and we’ll start lessons at 10am. You will all have been given a sticker with your name and group on- try to keep these on all day. Groups will be mixed up with pupils from many of our local Primary schools; don’t worry, you’ll be placed with people from your own school too.

You will take part in five lessons, from the following:

  • English
  • Drama
  • PE
  • Engineering/Product Design
  • Food Technology
  • Art
  • Music

You’ll bring a packed lunch from school and will have this on our playground (weather permitting). There will be a closing ceremony at the end of the day where students from each school will be given prizes for their contributions and effort during the day. There will be raffles and other chances to win prizes during the day too. You’ll return to your Primary School at 2.30pm.

During the day, we’ll have our Media Suite set up for you to have your photos taken with friends (both your school friends and the new friends you make on the day). Mr Williamson will transport you to Olympia or to the Acropolis of Athens with the power of Green Screen Technology.

Tip Four

One of the activities will be a very lively Olympic Games or a hands-on Technology session- wear trainers at least, and possibly your PE kit.

Have lots of fun!
