On Tuesday, 26 February, Miss Tweddle, Mrs Wilson and Mr White accompanied a group of Year 7 students to Newcastle University who had been selected to take part in their annual ‘UniVenture’ event.
This event is designed to give Year 7 students an insight into what going to university entails and to inform them about different university courses and opportunities, as well as building aspirations around continuing into higher education.
Throughout the day, students worked in groups to complete a series of challenges and activities which linked to a range of university faculties and gave an insight into different university courses. All activities were facilitated by Newcastle University Student Ambassadors and required the students to work as a team to problem solve and to think creatively in order to overcome the challenges in front of them.
Activities included;
- ‘Amazing Animals’ – which linked to zoology and biology courses and involved students designing their own species of animal to survive in a particular extreme climate.
- ‘Roving Reporters’ – which linked to media, history and research and involved students finding clues and answering to questions about the university whilst on a campus tour.
- ‘Monkey Puzzles’ – which linked to medical sciences and involved students designing ways to protect explorers from specific diseases whilst in the jungle.
- ‘Canyon Crossing’ – which linked to engineering and technology and involved students designing and building a bridge out of given materials, to hold a 2kg weight.
All Year 7 students that attended the event were fantastic ambassadors for Workington Academy throughout the day and came away with a greater insight into what University is and what it involves. Students are already looking forward to further opportunities relating to higher education and finding out more about attending university in the future.
