Mr Bird has been catching up with our recent Headteacher Learner of the Week winners.
Our winners from the 8 November are Akhlak Uddin from year 7 and Mia Spencer from year 9. Akhlak wins the award for mathematical excellence. He has made great progress in maths since he joined Workington Academy in September, to the extent that he was nominated independently by both of his teachers. His problem solving skills are excellent, as he demonstrated on the recent sequences topic. Akhlak’s favourite other subject is Science, and he has represented the school at Football. Mia was nominated in History, where she is studying the Industrial Revolution. She made a stunning model of a factory worker’s house (pictured), complete with furniture which was typical of the period. Mia also enjoys English and attends Netball Club.
Our winners from 15 November are Lilia Bew from year 7 and Harvey Carr from year 9. Lilia has really settled in well at Workington Academy and is excelling in and out of the classroom. She is one of our highest attending extra-curricular attendees and she has shown great progress in developing her own netball skills and performance in lessons and at after school practice, as well as helping her peers to do the same. Not only is she an outstanding player but she has been a great captain, continually encouraging and involving all other players in her class and on the team. In the match this week against West Lakes Academy, Lilia scored a record 15 goals from her position of Goal Attack, helping her team to a comfortable victory. Out of school, Lilia is progressing well in her football, having been selected for a Cumbria Talent Development Programme. Her favourite subjects are maths and PE. Harvey Carr in year 9 was nominated for his work in Geography. He has just produced the most fantastic diary piece, utilising everything that he has learned about sweat shop factories, writing with empathy and accuracy. He always puts in a huge amount of effort and this is really paying off. Harvey is in the scouts and he also enjoys PE and Drama.
