Workington Academy Radio students stepped into the world of live TV broadcasting last week as part of a special live news day at Workington Academy.
The day began with a production meeting, where students looked through national and local newspapers to research current news stories. They explored the headlines, discussed which stories would be most suitable for a school news broadcast, and then carried out further research to understand each topic in more detail.
After checking their sources, students held an editorial meeting to talk through their chosen stories and decide the running order for the live broadcast. They then worked on writing their own scripts, making sure the stories were clear, accurate and suitable for a live audience.
As part of the project, students also had the chance to use a custom-built teleprompter system created for the WA Radio studio. This allowed them to practise reading their scripts on screen while developing their confidence speaking directly to camera.
By 2pm, the students were ready to go live on YouTube. After overcoming an initial sound issue, they took the challenge of live TV news broadcasting completely in their stride, dealing with any issues calmly and professionally.
Mr and Mrs Williamson were incredibly proud of the students’ work throughout the day, from their professionally researched and written scripts to the confidence, teamwork and determination shown during the live broadcast.
The project gave students a valuable insight into the world of TV news production, including research, script writing, presenting, teamwork and live broadcasting.
