The Workington Academy Student Leadership Team met with the Senior Leadership Team on Wednesday morning for a business breakfast. A wide variety of topics were discussed and the student leaders were articulate, confident and professional in putting forward their views and questions. The 6th form study and social areas are an important feature of 6th form life. We talked about how to best use these spaces and also the kinds of study support students find beneficial. Students talked about how different 6th form courses are compared with GCSE courses and the skills needed to be successful in Year 12. We discussed the 6th form café and main dining provision, along with the cost of food and drink. Students want to make healthy eating choices and we will consider how to promote that more effectively at breakfast, break time and lunch.
Students value outside speakers from business, industry and higher education. They discussed the value of a recent presentation by Oxford University staff about the admissions process and what they are looking for in students’ applications. We also considered revision resources for 6th form courses and ensuring good communication with the school librarian when purchasing books for the new academic year.
Developing student leadership is a key feature of next year’s academy plan and we look forward to meeting our all our Student Leaders, Peer Mentors, Ambassadors and Student Council members on a regular basis in the future.
