All students who took part in our CET Innovate Competition, were recently awarded Headteacher Recognition Awards from Mr Bedford, including our team of finalists – Jordan, Riley, Laney and Millie from Year 7.
We have recently held our annual CET Innovate competition, which saw six teams of Year 7, 8 and 9 students put their inventiveness, creativity and teamwork to the test for the Cumbria Education Trust ‘Innovate Challenge’. Whereby they have challenged Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 pupils to show outstanding teamwork to create a world changing idea – focused around helping the environment. Their task was to Generate, Design, Advertise and Present their world changing idea to a panel of judges.
Students at Workington Academy generated, designed and made a prototype of their idea then pitched this to our School Judges or ‘Dragons’ – Mr Bedford, Mrs McAllister and Mrs Kinrade.
The standard of the competition was incredibly high, with all teams generating and presenting excellent ideas and products with great confidence and clarity, all of which could certainly be moved forward to help and support the environment.
Based on the Competition Criteria – the teams were judged on the following;
· Concept – what makes their project innovative, interesting or different from similar projects?
· Purpose – how well will the product solve the problem identified?
· Creativity – shown in the project design, model and logo.
· Teamwork – shown throughout all stages of the project.
· Pitch Quality – presentation skills, enthusiasm, clarity and connection with audience.
The results were as follows;

We are delighted to say that the Fire Enquirers went on to represent Workington Academy at the CET Innovate Final, where they went up against the school winners from Cumbria Education Trust’s other 12 schools. We are delighted to say that they performed exceptionally well, at what was a fantastic event, pitching their idea to a panel of external judges, all from industry. Unfortunately, they were narrowly beaten to the trophy by William Howard School’s ‘Glyco Fuel’.

Well done to all involved on such a fantastic event and display of creative talent and ingenuity!
We cannot wait for next year’s competition already!
