Workington Academy are celebrating a truly historic achievement before Easter, as our Under 14 girls football team secured the school’s first ever County Cup title.
Facing a strong and familiar opponent in Trinity, the team knew they were in for a tough contest, and the match certainly delivered. Trinity edged the first half and went into the break leading 2–1, applying early pressure and taking their chances well.
At half time, the focus was clear and simple. The message was to get back to basics, meet the ball, stay composed, and keep play on the ground. The team responded brilliantly.
The second half saw a completely transformed performance. With increased confidence and control, Workington Academy began to dominate, winning key battles across the pitch and creating attacking opportunities. As momentum shifted, the goals followed, turning the game around in style.
Throughout the match, the team embodied Workington Academy’s core values of Respect, Resilience and Responsibility. Every player contributed with determination, teamwork and excellent communication, showing real maturity in a high pressure game.
The match was played in great spirit, competitive and physical, but always fair. It was a fantastic advert for school sport, with both teams showing quality and sportsmanship.
This squad represents a brilliant mix of talent and development. Many of the players have progressed significantly since Year 7, growing into confident, consistent performers who now work together as a strong and united team.
This County Cup victory is a testament to their hard work, commitment and belief.
A huge congratulations to all players involved on an outstanding and historic achievement.
